A splint is a hard wrap that is used to support and protect injured ligaments, bones, or tendons. They help facilitate a fast and smooth healing process while providing relief from pain and swelling. Splints can be used to treat a variety of injuries, including:
- Sprains: A splint is very commonly used to treat sprains, which cause pain, tenderness, and swelling. A splint will stabilize the injured body part, helping reduce swelling and facilitate healing.
- Minor fractures: A splint is an excellent treatment option for minor fractures in the foot, ankle, wrist, or hand, especially when there is a substantial amount of swelling. This is because a splint can easily be adjusted to accommodate changes in volume if the swelling increases or decreases.
- Achilles tendinopathy: Caused by continuous small injuries to the Achilles tendon, Achilles tendinopathy causes pain, swelling, and stiffness and weakens the Achilles tendon. In serious cases, a splint can be used to stabilize the tendon and reduce movement, helping it heal.
- Plantar fasciitis: Sometimes also called “jogger’s heel,” plantar fasciitis is a disorder that generates pain in the heel and on the bottom of the foot as a result of micro tears, the breakdown of collagen, and scarring. Pain is often intensified when the foot or toes are bent up toward the shin. Causes of plantar fasciitis include long periods of standing, an increase in exercise, and obesity. People with high feet arches or with flat feet are also more prone to developing the condition. Splints can help substantially with plantar fasciitis, stabilizing the foot to allow micro tears to heal.
When a splint is needed to treat an injury, it is often advantageous to opt for an adjustable splint. At Select Medical Products, we offer several models of adjustable splints, including the Adjustable Telescoping Splint with Softgood and the Pediatric Adjustable Telescoping Splint with Softgood for foot injuries. Ideal for stabilizing a foot injury, such as a strained tendon or ligament or fractured bone, Select Medical Product’s adjustable splints can be adjusted up to 3 inches in length and can subsequently accommodate up to 24 different foot sizes.
